The Rahan woman has chosen a university in Texas

A TALENTED emerging young Offaly golfer has been lined up for a prestige scholarship to the USA.

One of the outstanding young female amateur golfers in the country, Ella Cantwell's potential has resulted in a scholarship offer in Texas.

The young Rahan woman will be going to Abilene Christian University (ACU) in central Texas in August 2027, after she completes her Leaving Certificate at Killina Presentation Secondary School – Abilene is located 150 miles from Forth Worth and is just under 200 miles from Dallas.

Cantwell developed her golf at nearby Esker Hills Golf Club and is one of the top youths in the country, achieving international recognition and winning a host of titles.

Fifth recently in the Irish Girls Amateur Open Championship in Dublin, she became the number 1 ranked U18 female golfer in the country in 2025 and her achievements were honoured by Esker Hills with the award of honorary life membership there.

She won her first Irish cap in 2025 when her impressive list of achievements included:

U18 order of merit winner;

Golf Ireland's Scratch Cup Order of Merit winner for women;

1st cap for Ireland;

Winner of the Ulster U18 girls championship;

Ballybunnion Scratch Cup winner;

Winner of Esker Hills Club matchplay;

Member of the Tullamore senior foursomes team who won the Leinster Central pennant;

Member of Leinster U18 girls inter-provincial winning team;

The youngest player on the Leinster adult inter-provincial team;

Set three course records in Esker Hills, Millicent and Newcastle West.

She has continued that form into 2026 and a scholarship in the USA was always her likely destination as she pursues a professional career in golf.

Currently in fifth year in Killina Secondary School, Ella confirmed her choice on Instagram, describing it as an “amazing opportunity” and thanking all who have helped her develop as a golfer, including her home club, Esker Hills.

Killina Secondary School posted on their Facebook page: “There is a bright future ahead for this rising young golf star. We are so proud of you Ella and can’t wait to watch your career grow.”

She is currently ranked 163rd on the European Golf Rankings and has been in great form in recent weeks:  In April, the 17 year old had a top 20 finish at the Scottish Girls’ Open Championship, followed by a top 10 at the South of Ireland Women’s Amateur Open Championship, before finishing third at the All-Ireland Irish Schools Championship.
