Offaly senior hurling star hospitalised after great draw with Kilkenny

Ace forward recovering well from latest scare
THERE was serious concern among his family members, team mates and management, friends and the wider public when an Offaly hurling star was brought to hospital shortly after Sunday's terrific Leinster senior championship draw with Kilkenny.
Captain and ace forward Charlie Mitchell went to the A and E unit at Tullamore General Hospital after being in discomfort following the final whistle.
The Kilcormac-Killoughey marksman had made a sensational return to action with a fantastic performance in the draw with Dublin in the opening round when he scored 1-3 and ran riot. He played the full game in the defeat to Galway and in Sunday's draw in Tullamore.
Mitchell's return to action had given Offaly a huge boost as he missed the first half of the season after a health scare early on. He had got extensive heart tests after getting chest pains in the wake of a challenge game for University of Galway, where he is studying accountancy.
Mitchell revealed before the start of the championship that his heart had got inflamed – the medical term is myocarditis and it is usually caused by viral infections.

He was brought to St James' Hospital on Sunday evening where a procedure was carried out and the only concern is for the players well-being and future health – the latest incident will of course lead to doubts about his short and long term top level hurling career but sport is a very minor consideration at times like this.
An Offaly GAA statement on Monday morning outlined: “Following yesterday’s game against Kilkenny, Charlie Mitchell felt unwell. After assessment by our medical team Charlie went to the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore. Charlie was transferred to St James’ Hospital where he underwent a procedure last night. We have been in contact with the Mitchell family this morning and they have advised that he is currently recovering and is in good form. Everyone at Offaly GAA wishes Charlie a speedy recovery.”
Mitchell is one of the new golden generation of Offaly hurlers and was in great form as Offaly went to the All-Ireland U20 hurling final in 2023, losing to Cork.
He has been sensational for Kilcormac-Killoughey as they won the Senior Hurling Championship in 2024 and 2025. He was the Offaly senior hurler of the year both years and was honoured with the county captaincy this year.
He scored a crucial point in the draw with Kilkenny and had been earmarked for special attention by the Kilkenny defence – Mitchell had received a two match club suspension for an incident that injured Adrian Mullen in Kilcormac-Killoughey's defeat by Ballyhale Shamrocks in the Leinster club championship late last year and it looked like the Kilkenny defence were trying to soften him up on Sunday.
Mitchell, however, is a teak tough hurler and he did not back away from it, standing up to this opponents. Him and Kilkenny corner back Mikey Butler were eventually yellow carded after a first half tussle that ended with Mitchell's helmet off his head and on the ground and that took the heat out of those type of confrontations.
On a day when the ball didn't really flow for him, Mitchell's work rate and desire commanded complete admiration and his presence and the threat he posed created plenty of space for his team mates in the attack.
The full extent of his future will become clear later in the week but it places a major doubt on his involvement in the remainder of the season, whatever about long term.
