Children take shelter at Rangers training centre after pipe burst hits supply

Tens of thousands of people in Scotland’s largest city have had their water supply disrupted after a massive pipe burst.

A 36-inch water main burst in East Dunbartonshire’s Milngavie, causing around 100,000 residents and businesses in Glasgow to suffer disruption to their supply on Tuesday.

The force of the mains burst split Auchenhowie Road open, and children at the nearby Lulaby Lane nursery had to take shelter in the nearby Rangers Training Centre.

The split to the mains, which has a diameter of almost a metre, caused flooding in the area, but Scottish Water said it had now isolated the supply.

The burst watermains has seen interruption to the supply of areas including Glasgow city centre, Kelvinside, Tradeston, and Ibrox.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “Our teams onsite have now isolated this water main, and supplies are restoring to 56,000 properties across Knightswood, Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick.

“We are carrying out network alterations to restore all remaining water supplies in Glasgow city centre, Kelvinside, Tradeston and Ibrox, of which we expect to have restored for 22:00hrs this evening.”

East Dunbartonshire Council said because of the burst pipe Auchenhowie Road, which was at the junction of Glasgow Road, had seen both roads closed.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are also at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman said officers were called at around 3.50pm to “assist with road closures following severe flooding” in the area. 

“A number of roads in the area have been closed and police are advising people to use alternative routes,” the spokesman said.
