Man rescued after yacht runs aground

A man has been rescued after his yacht began drifting and ran aground on an island in windy weather.

The Coastguard picked up a mayday call at 8.41pm on Wednesday from the man, reporting he was adrift and that the vessel’s engine was not working.

The yacht grounded on Fuday island, north of Barra in the Outer Hebrides.

Barra RNLI all-weather lifeboat went to the scene and launched its dinghy to rescue the man before taking him back to Castlebay on Barra.

Barra Coastguard team and Coastguard rescue helicopter 948 were also called out to help.

The man was not injured.
