Man arrested after police officer injured at harbour

A 31-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly making off in a dinghy following the assault of a police officer.

Police were called to reports of concern for a man in Greenock, Inverclyde, in the early hours of Sunday.

He was traced to East India Harbour in the town, where police say a disturbance took place and an officer was assaulted before the man escaped on a dinghy.

The officer was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and kept in for observation, with police refusing to divulge the manner of their injuries.

The man was later arrested at Rhu Marina near Helensburgh – across the River Clyde from Greenock.

Reports suggest a police helicopter was scrambled to the scene, with flight tracking tools showing a take-off from Glasgow just after 7am and the aircraft flying erratically over the river between Greenock and Helensburgh, before returning at around 8.30am.
