Hundreds of St Andrews students take part in traditional pier walk

Hundreds of St Andrews University students have marked the start of the new academic year by taking part in the traditional pier walk.

Clad in their distinctive red cloaks, they walked along the harbour walls of the town, taking part in one of the university’s oldest traditions.

The pier walk, the first event of the new academic year, sees students walk down to the end of the pier, climb up the ladder there and then walk back along the highest part of the pier wall.

However, last year’s route for the walk had to be changed, because of storm damage to the main pier.

This year’s event took place ahead of the  start of the Martinmas semester at the university on Monday, September 15.
