The owner of a hospital for rescue hedgehogs has said she is “angry and upset” after a shed housing the animals was damaged by fire.
No rescue hedgehogs were injured in the blaze at the Forth Hedgehog Hospital in Rosyth, Fife, which broke out at about 7.40pm on Wednesday.
However, one wild hedgehog, which had been hibernating in a pile of logs that were set ablaze, died after being recovered from the rubble.
The Forth Hedgehog Hospital takes in and cares for sick, injured and orphaned wild hedgehogs found by the general public.
A GoFundMe page set up to raise money to repair the damage has already seen £11,000 donated, out of a £13,000 target.
In a statement on the GoFundMe page, owner Nadia Al-Dujali said: “The shed is intact, obviously burnt on the outside and roof. The fire brigade had it out in minutes. I’m shaken and scared.”
She went on: “The hogs are all fine which is the main thing, apart from one poor wild hedgehog that was rescued from the rubble this morning.
“The rescue hedgehogs were checked last night and will be getting FULL health checks this morning.
“I was going down periodically through the night to make sure everyone was OK, so I’m exhausted.”
A picture of the blaze posted on the GoFundMe page shows orange flames soaring into the evening sky above a group of trees.
Another image taken the next day shows an area strewn with charred and blackened wood, and the fire-damaged side of the shed.
On Thursday she shared the news on social media that the wild hedgehog had died, despite attempts to save its life.
“The wild hedgehog from the fire site has passed away. I’m so angry and upset”, she wrote in a post in block capitals and with crying emojis.
She added that the hog had been one of her “releasees” as it had her tags.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We attended a fire on Middlebank Street in Rosyth.
“One crew attended from Dunfermline, and they advised there was a large quantity of garden rubbish alight.”
