Pedestrian seriously injured in crash with car being pursued by police

A pedestrian is in hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car that was being pursued by police.

Officers were following a blue Vauxhall Corsa after it failed to stop for them on Newington Road, Edinburgh, at around 12.55pm on Wednesday.

Police said after a short pursuit, the car struck a pedestrian at the junction of Liberton Road and Gilmerton Road.

The Corsa failed to stop after the crash and carried on south on Gilmerton Road before later being found abandoned a short distance away on Glenallan Drive.

The pedestrian, a 47-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment to serious injuries.

Police are appealing for information about the incident.

Sergeant Grant Hastie said: “Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and trace those responsible.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the crash, or saw a blue Vauxhall Corsa in the area beforehand or afterwards, to come forward.

“We are also keen to speak to anyone with dashcam or private CCTV footage that may assist our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1486 of October 22.
