Glasgow church badly damaged after fire tears through building

A church building in Glasgow has suffered a fire overnight and appears significantly damaged.

Flames tore through Pollokshaws Parish Church after the blaze broke out on Sunday before 3am.

The building dates back to 1843 and is B-listed.

Once firefighters had extinguished the flames later on Sunday, the roof of the building appeared to have been destroyed and its walls had also suffered damage.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to a fire at a derelict church at 2.44am.

A spokesman said: “We mobilised six appliances, including one height appliance.”

Firefighters had put out the blaze by Sunday afternoon and were preparing to leave the scene.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Glasgow City Council urged drivers to avoid the area, saying: “Shawbridge Street between both terminations of Shawholm Crescent is currently closed to traffic due to a fire.

“Emergency services are on location.

“Road users are advised to use alternative routes and delays are to expected.”
