Tories to press ministers on work to upgrade trunk roads around Scotland

The Scottish Conservatives will press ministers to speed up work to upgrade key trunk roads around Scotland, including the the A75, A77 and A96.

Russell Findlay’s party will also demand a guarantee that there be no further delays on the work to fully dual the A9.

The Tories will use their business time at Holyrood on Wednesday to call for the trunk roads to be dualled or upgraded.

Transport spokeswoman Sue Webber said there should be legislation to fast-track the dualling of the A9 by the end of the next parliament.

Sue Webber MSP said: “The state of key roads across Scotland are a national disgrace and the SNP’s incompetence is continuing to cost lives.

“SNP ministers have sat on their hands while they have fallen into a state of total disrepair despite their repeated promises to dual roads such as A9 and A96.

“It is unacceptable that motorists are being treated with contempt by an SNP government that shamefully keeps kicking the can down the road.

“We are the only party at Holyrood that has proposed bold action to tackle this issue – with our plans to accelerate the dualling of roads like the A9 and A75 through private investment, which ministers cannot turn their nose up at.”

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We have been very clear that we remain committed to delivering full A9 Dualling, between Perth and Inverness, and the 2035 timescale.

“Our position on the A96 has not changed – we want to fully dual the A96 and we are already starting the dualling process from Inverness to Nairn, having acquired the land for the scheme earlier this year.

“The strategic importance of the A75 and A77 to Scotland’s economy is recognised by the Scottish Government – on the A77 we have completed five, major improvements totalling £64 million, including the £29 million Maybole bypass.

“On the A75, we have completed six, major, road improvement projects with a total value of over £50 million, further enhancing the safety record of both routes.”
