SNP urges Anas Sarwar to recall and destroy ‘dodgy’ campaign leaflet

Labour Party chiefs are being challenged to recall and destroy a “dodgy” campaign leaflet which mistakenly quoted a maternity campaigner.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar apologised after Claire Fleming said she had not consented to being quoted in the leaflet.

Mr Sarwar said it had been a “mistake made by a member of the team” but he took responsibility for it, apologising “unequivocally” to Ms Fleming.

SNP MSP Kevin Stewart said Labour needs to go further and recall all copies of the leaflet, ensuring they are not distributed to any more homes.

Mr Stewart said: “Anas Sarwar has finally done the right thing and admitted his leaflet contains an outright lie.

“But his dodgy leaflet, that includes made up quotes, has already been sent to tens of thousands of voters.

“Worse still, it’s reckoned that thousands more are set to be shoved through voters’ letterboxes this weekend.

“Anas Sarwar needs to right this wrong by stopping the distribution of any more of his leaflets and recall those that have already been sent to households.

“Voters need Labour to come clean about how many of these leaflets were produced, how many have been delivered, and which areas of Scotland have received the deceptive campaign material.

“This is a serious issue and it needs to be treated as such by Anas Sarwar.”

A Scottish Labour spokesperson said: “We have been in touch with Claire directly to apologise for this regrettable administrative error.”
