Driver arrested after boy, 15, dies after crash in Scottish Borders

A 15-year-old boy has died and four others have been taken to hospital after a crash in the Scottish Borders.

Police Scotland said a man was arrested over the collision which involved a black BMW 530e and a yellow Fiat 500 Abarth.

The incident happened at around 2.40pm on Friday on the A701 at Hearthstane near Tweedsmuir.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, arrived and a 15-year-old passenger in the Fiat was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 54-year-old male driver of the Fiat and a 21-year-old male passenger were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The 27-year-old driver of the BMW and his 26-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The 27-year-old was later arrested and then released pending further inquiries.

The road was closed for crash investigation work and reopened around 11pm on Friday.

Sergeant Jamie Humpage said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the boy who died, and they have asked for privacy at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone in the area at the time who saw what happened to get in touch.

“Please also check any dashcam footage you have to see if it has captured something that could assist with our investigation.”

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1818 of Friday April 17.
