‘Landmark’ exams get under way for pupils across Scotland

The head of Scotland’s new exams body has wished pupils well as a “landmark” series of assessments gets under way.

This year’s exams are the first overseen by Qualifications Scotland – which recently took over from the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Over the next few weeks, more than 131,600 pupils will sit exams in schools and colleges across Scotland, with over 8,400 invigilators keeping a watchful eye over them.

More than 800,000 separate exam scripts will be marked by 7,590 markers, before over 148,700 students receive their results – with these sent by post, email and text message on Tuesday August 4.

The first written exams are taking place on Wednesday – National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Spanish, along with National 5 and Higher environmental science.

Exams continue until Monday June 1, with National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Latin taking place that day, along with National 5 and Higher Urdu.

Over the weeks in between, students will be tested in subjects ranging from accounting and application of mathematics, classical studies and childcare and development, to politics and practical cookery.

“I’m deeply grateful too to the many thousands who work with us to set, invigilate and mark exams and assessments.

“Teachers, lecturers and training providers are at the heart of delivering our qualifications and will play an even stronger role in the work of Qualifications Scotland going forward.”
