Sullay Kaikai’s brilliant header in the 89th minute earned 10-man Cambridge an unlikely 1-1 draw with Bolton.
The U’s looked to be heading for defeat when they had Jubril Okedina red carded four minutes after half-time. With Bolton preparing to take a corner defender Okedina was sent off for violent conduct for clashing with George Johnston.
The visitors became immediately dominant and went ahead after 59 minutes. Danny Andrew gave the ball away in a dangerous position and Aaron Collins found the net despite a touch from keeper Vicente Reyes.
That looked set to be decisive, until Andrew made amends by providing the cross which was headed beyond Nathan Baxter by Kaikai.
Cambridge had started the game better and missed two good chances in the opening four minutes. Keeper Baxter beat away Kaikai’s shot, and then kept out Ryan Loft’s effort following Liam Bennett’s deep cross.
In the last minute of the half Jay Matete could not capitalise on a poor James Brophy clearance, blazing well over for Bolton.
