Aribim Pepple struck early to give Southend bragging rights over Braintree with a 1-0 victory in the Essex derby at Cressing Road.
Striker Pepple, on loan from Luton, scored with a superb finish from 20 yards out in the 20th minute.
Braintree contested the goal, however, claiming that James Vennings was fouled in the build up.
Pepple was a threat throughout the National League showdown and could have added a second, although the hosts also had their moments during 11 minute of added time.
Southend’s eighth league win of the season lifts them up one place to 14th, while Braintree remain in 20th.
