Thierry Small earns Charlton last-gasp win over Shrewsbury

Thierry Small scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time as Charlton clinched a dramatic 1-0 home win over Shrewsbury.

The winner came just moments after the visitors had waster a glorious chance to take the lead, Shrews substitute Jordan Shipley failing to get a clean connection on Luca Hoole’s cross with the goal gaping.

The first half was a largely subdued affair, although Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jamal Blackman had to push away an early free-kick from Luke Berry.

Small cut into a dangerous position in the 30th minute but drove his left-footed effort over the crossbar.

Blackman was called back into action early in the second half, plunging to his left to keep out Miles Leaburn’s downward header from a Berry corner.

Charlton captain Greg Docherty’s goalbound shot struck team-mate Berry in the 57th minute after Josh Edwards’ low cross created panic in the Shrews penalty area.

Shrewsbury struggled to create chances, with their first significant attempt on target not coming until the 72nd minute, Addicks keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer confidently collecting John Marquis’ strike.

Shipley then squandered his golden opportunity before Small slammed home a last-gasp winner.
