Fleetwood complete double over runaway leaders Walsall

Fleetwood Town inflicted a second successive defeat on League Two leaders Walsall thanks to two first-half headed goals.

The Cod Army, who lost at home to second-bottom Carlisle on Saturday, hit the front barely 10 minutes in thanks to defender Shaun Rooney.

The former St Mirren player glanced home his second goal in a week following a delightful curling free-kick from full-back Mackenzie Hunt.

The United Arab Emirates international was soon back on set-piece delivery duty and it was his corner that allowed Town to double their advantage on 17 minutes as centre-back James Bolton rose highest to power home a deserved second for his team.

The away side, missing their captain Jamille Matt, looked shell-shocked to be two goals behind so early on and rarely threatened in the first period, with Jamie Jellis’ tame effort at the far post their only attempt of note.

After the break it was more of the same as Hunt’s left-footed deliveries into the Walsall box created more openings, with Bolton going close to a second just on the hour.

Town saw the game out well and the result means that they are the first team to do the double over Walsall in league action so far this season.
