Leyton Orient held to goalless stalemate at home by struggling Wigan

Leyton Orient’s hopes of closing in on the League One play-off spots were dented by a 0-0 home draw against struggling Wigan at Brisbane Road.

Orient had only won one of their previous nine meetings with Wigan and another game was added to that statistic as the teams fought out a goalless stalemate, leaving Richie Wellens’ men six points off the top six.

An uninspiring bland first 45 minutes provided the easiest of afternoons for both goalkeepers with neither having a single shot to save.

Sam Tickle was the first to warm his hands as Orient upped their game after the break. He tipped a rasping effort from Jack Currie over the bar, then clawed away a shot from Randell Williams before turning over a well-struck drive from Dan Agyei.

The home side continued to dominate the ball without the guile to break down a resolute Latics defence.

The best opportunity for the hosts fell to substitute Diallang Jaiyesimi but he got the ball stuck under his feet when meeting a cross from Dilan Markanday allowing Tickle to snatch the ball.

At the opposite end, O’s shot-stopper Josh Keeley was a virtue onlooker and was only called into action deep into added time when he collected a corner from the visitors.
