Dale Taylor scored a late equaliser as Wigan rescued a 1-1 draw at Northampton on the final day of the season.
Tariqe Fosu fired the Cobblers ahead before half-time but Taylor’s stoppage-time goal meant the spoils were shared.
The home team were first to threaten at Sixfields and Terry Taylor’s devilish free-kick delivery would have forced an own goal had Sam Tickle not pulled off an excellent save.
With nothing on the line for either side, the game lacked intensity and excitement, but things were livened up by a fantastic opening goal for Northampton in the 33rd minute.
Nesta Guinness-Walker led the charge from a Wigan corner, driving over halfway and playing a wonderful pass for Fosu, who chopped inside a defender and fired sweetly into the far corner.
Northampton were comfortable until the hour mark when Wigan enjoyed their best spell of the game and almost levelled as Mitch Pinnock cleared Jason Kerr’s header off the line.
The visitors did eventually equalise and it came right at the death through Taylor, who poked in James Carragher’s cross, before Latics defender Will Aimson saw red for a late challenge with the last act of the season.
