Bristol Rovers end wait for a win thanks to Ellis Harrison strike

Ellis Harrison’s first goal since returning to Bristol Rovers was enough to give the Gas a first win since March as they hung on for a 1-0 victory over 10-man Cambridge at the Memorial Stadium.

Harrison, back at the Memorial Stadium after being released by MK Dons over the summer, sent the home fans wild when he put Darrell Clarke’s side ahead in the 34th minute when he volleyed in after skipper Alfie Kilgour headed on Macauley Southam-Hales’ long throw.

His co-striker Promise Omochere wasted a chance to strengthen the hosts’ grip on the contest in the 47th minute and apologised to his colleagues after shooting straight at Jake Eastwood instead of passing to the unmarked Luke Thomas.

Eastwood was almost caught out soon after when Jack Sparkes’ inswinging corner headed goalwards but he avoided embarrassment by desperately palming the ball away.

In a nerve-jangling finale, Neil Harris’ visitors piled on the pressure late on but ex-Rovers striker Ryan Loft headed over their only notable chance.

The visitors’ frustration boiled over deep into stoppage time and Mamadou Jobe was sent off for a second yellow after fouling Omochere as the hosts held on for a long-awaited victory.
