Grant McCann says ‘no one is resting on laurels’ after Doncaster’s latest win

Grant McCann insists no one at Doncaster is resting on their laurels after they continued their strong start to the season with a 1-0 victory over Rotherham.

Captain Owen Bailey headed home his fifth goal of the season to give Rovers a fourth win from their opening six matches back in League One, which have been accompanied by a pair of victories in the Carabao Cup.

Though they have taken to life in the third tier with ease, McCann insists nobody is taking anything for granted after only one month of the campaign.

“It’s very, very positive and we just want to keep going,” McCann said.

“We’ve got another big one next Saturday against Bradford and hopefully the fans come out and support us in that one.

“It’s been a really positive start and we’re pleased, but no one is resting on their laurels. We move onto the next one.

“I thought it was a typical derby game and I always thought we had the quality to win it. That came with the ball from James Maxwell and the tremendous run and header from Owen Bailey, who is in top, top form at the minute.

“I’m really pleased with the resilience of the group. We hit the post, hit the bar and looked threatening all game. In the second half we had to dig in a bit and we had to stand firm, as you do in a typical derby game.

“It’s an unbelievable effort from the group and another good three points.”

Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw said the result “stings” after suggesting a poor 20-minute spell proved costly for his team.

Hamshaw cut an emotional figure following the defeat, which ensured the Millers remain winless since the opening day of the season.

“It was very frustrating,” Hamshaw said. “I can break the game down tactically and I can do loads of things, but like all Rotherham fans I’m gutted that we’ve lost a game 1-0.

“I can say we were the better team for large percentages of that game and that I thought we had a bad 20 minutes before half-time. But it stings that one.

“It doesn’t matter how we started and how we finished. We’ve got to be better in certain areas and at certain things, but the raw emotion of it at the minute hurts.

“We’ve had two games against local rivals this week and people can dress it up and say there’s been improvements, but ultimately it’s two defeats. That’s not what I’m here for.

“You win and lose games at both ends of the pitch and at the moment we’re not quite good enough at either.”
