Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan scored the only goal as Reading moved out of the League One relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Northampton.
The Royals dominated a scrappy first half only to be denied by a string of fines saves from Town goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons.
And the hosts made the breakthrough in the 65th minute through a precise header from Ehibhatiomhan to end their four-match winless league run.
Neither side made much impression in the dour opening stages but Fitzsimons did well to palm away a firm Paudie O’Connor header from a Charlie Savage corner.
Town replied when Ethan Wheatley found space in the home area but was thwarted by the faintest of touches from home keeper Jack Stevens.
Fitzsimons was again to the fore before the interval, making superb stops to thwart Lewis Wing and Daniel Kyerewaa from distance.
Soon after the break Ehibhatiomhan skewed an effort wide, with Fitzsimons beaten, but as the Royals continued to force the pace, the tall striker was rewarded 20 minutes into the half.
Paddy Lane slung over a cross from the left and Ehibhatiomhan stooped to cleverly guide his header past the previously unbeatable Fitzsimons.
