Luke Williams thrilled with Peterborough’s attack and defence

New boss Luke Williams was left purring after Peterborough moved off the foot of the League One table with a 5-0 thrashing of AFC Wimbledon.

Harry Leonard and Gustav Lindgren bagged braces, either side of Kyrell Lisbie’s effort, as Posh ran riot at London Road.

Williams enjoyed victory in his first game in charge at Posh as they dumped former winners Cardiff out of the FA Cup in the first round last weekend.

But he will be mightily impressed with this performance as Posh performed well above their relegation fodder pre-game status as they put the visitors to the sword.

And Williams beamed: “I’m delighted. Scoring five goals is wonderful but for me it’s more about the endeavour and more about the commitment.

“We know inside the camp they mean the world with people putting their bodies on the line and making runs that are lung-busters and leg-burners.

“The credit goes to the players. They really delivered what we asked of them.

“I’m so impressed with Harry and the mentality of Gus to come off the bench is the one that you want. He’s seen Harry score two goals and impress and his attitude is he wants to get involved and do the same.

“We’re so early in [to my tenure] that we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, but I’m so grateful to the players because without question they’ve worked hard for me.

“We have a long way to go before we’re a really good team. I’m grateful for the players for the commitment they’ve shown.

“I want the fans to remember the goals and be excited, but we weathered a storm at 2-0 before that third goal and that was the part of the game that pleased me the most to withstand the pressure.

“To win game regularly you need that defensive desire to protect the goal and we saw that. We have to keep that.”

Johnnie Jackson’s side had gone seven games without defeat in all competitions but they have now lost three on the bounce without scoring in a worrying change of fortunes.

And he said: “That wasn’t good enough. It’s hugely disappointing. The thing for me is the types of goals we’re conceding. It’s so out of character from my team.

“The goals we’ve given away are horrendous and I haven’t seen much of that from them.

“It’s disappointing. I don’t think what we’ve seen today is a true reflection and we need to make sure it’s a one off.

“You can lose games of football and Peterborough played well and they showed that they shouldn’t be where they are.

“I wasn’t surprised because I’ve come up against Luke before and know how he wants his teams to play.

“They’re trying to be a different type of team and they did it really well so credit to them but we’ve gifted them four of the five goals probably and that’s hard to take.

“You can’t win any game of football when you do that.”
