Lee Grant frustrated as Huddersfield draw ‘very one-sided affair’ at Northampton

Huddersfield boss Lee Grant was “very frustrated” not to come away with all three points after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at Northampton.

Nesta Guinness-Walker’s thunderous volley gave the Cobblers an early lead at Sixfields but Leo Castledine headed home a Dion Charles cross to level before half-time.

The best chance of an error-strewn second half fell to Huddersfield substitute Cameron Ashia but he failed to convert as the visitors’ winless run in League One extend to four games.

“Time will tell whether or not it’s a good point,” said Grant, whose side are eighth in the table.

“A point is a point and we’re away from home at a ground that’s difficult for lots of reasons – the conditions, the pitch, an opposition who are organised and work really hard.

“Kev’s got his side playing a really hard, aggressive brand of football so a point away from home is important but, if we’re really honest, we know it’s a game we have to win.

“We had the opportunities to win but more frustrating than the missed opportunities was that we didn’t protect our goal well enough for their one moment and one foray into our box.

“That’s the game and that’s what it all comes down to and we have to be much better in that moment because we were very specific and detailed in what we would have to do in this game.

“That was a scenario which we discussed and rehearsed so it’s a big frustration for me that we can’t defend it better.

“The stats show a very one-sided affair so we’re very frustrated not to win the game.”

Northampton boss Kevin Nolan said: “It was a hard-fought draw. You can see the quality of the squad they’ve assembled and they can make five changes and it doesn’t really impact them too much.

“We got off to a good start and I thought we we were well worth the 1-0 lead but then we never really cracked on from there and that was the disappointing thing for me.

“The conditions were difficult and both teams huffed and puffed. They had a decent chance in the second half and we had a decent one in the first so, all in all, a draw was probably fair.

“We can take credit for matching a top side but that’s why we assembled this squad – we want to be able to compete with the big clubs in the division. I think we’re showing we can do that.

“But it isn’t a game where I’m walking away thinking, ‘we should have got more than what we got’, because a point was fair. There’s been a few games where I’ve felt disappointed not to get something but that wasn’t the case tonight.”
