Luke Garbutt’s stoppage-time strike secured Salford a thrilling 4-3 win over Colchester having been 3-1 behind.
Colchester took an eighth-minute lead when Harry Anderson finished smartly from close range, after Arthur Read’s low shot had rattled a post.
But Kadeem Harris equalised in the 11th minute for Salford with a fine finish from Cole Stockton’s assist.
Garbutt hit the woodwork before Colchester restored their advantage in the 51st minute when Ellis Iandolo lashed home after showing persistence in the Salford area.
And it was 3-1 four minutes later when Read unleashed a superb strike into the far corner from Samson Tovide’s pass.
But Salford pulled a goal four minutes later when Ade Oluwo headed in Garbutt’s pinpoint free-kick into the box.
Substitute Fabio Borini then equalised from the penalty spot for the hosts in the 75th minute after Rob Hunt had been penalised for a foul on Oluwo in the area, before Garbutt won it for Salford with a sweet left-foot strike from Borini’s pass in the second minute of stoppage time.
