Wigan boss Ryan Lowe was “buzzing” with a 2-0 victory over Burton that ended a three-game winless run and lifted his side back into the top half of Sky Bet League One.
It was their first victory since a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at the beginning of December.
“I’m really pleased and buzzing with the result and performance,” Lowe said after seeing teenage striker Harrison Bettoni grab his third goal of the season and Dara Costelloe score for the first time since September.
“I thought we could have been 2-0 up in the first half and it felt like a case of ‘here we go again’ with missed chances, but I’ve got belief in this group and I will always stick with them.
“Dara has been through a bit of a tough time, and I’ve put faith in a young 18-year-old.”
Costelloe wrapped up the points with a crucial second goal just moments after Albion should have equalised through Kyran Lofthouse’s header, and Lowe was delighted for his summer signing.
“I’m over the moon for him,” Lowe added.
“Strikers go through those sorts of run and I had a chat with him just before Christmas and gave him my thoughts.
“I can’t do it for him, but he has listened and gone away and took things on board on that he needs to do. I think he has felt the pressure a bit of being a big-money signing in the summer and being the main man, but he has come through that hopefully now.”
Burton boss Gary Bowyer was frustrated that his side could not build on the Boxing Day win over Northampton after a sickness bug swept through the squad 24 hours before the game.
“We were good and bright in training yesterday and I was excited for one or two that we had to change,” Bowyer said.
“But we’ve had a crazy 24 hours where we had to send five home with a sickness bug and some of them have done well to play tonight.”
Despite the disruption, Bowyer was disappointed with his side’s start to the game.
“We didn’t start well,” he said, after Costelloe had almost got Wigan off to the perfect start with an early opportunity.
“There wasn’t much in the game in the first half and we said to them at half-time about finding one bit of quality because that is what I thought would settle it.
“Unfortunately for us that bit of quality was their cross and header, although it was more than preventable from our point of view.”
Bowyer added: “We didn’t do enough with conviction, but the players have given everything in terms of energy after such a quick turnaround.”
