Boss Luke Williams felt patience was the key factor to Peterborough rescuing a late point in a 1-1 League One draw at home to Reading.
Daniel Kyerewaa put the visitors in front from a corner they had been gifted after Posh goalkeeper Alex Bass made a mess of clearing a backpass.
Joel Pereria made a good save to keep out Harry Leonard at the start of the second half but Gustav Lindgren levelled after tapping home Peter Kioso’s cross with 12 minutes left.
Posh could have won it late with Lindgren being denied by a great save in stoppage-time.
“The players showed great character,” said Williams. “It was a performance that required a lot of concentration and patience. Reading did a great job at trying to defend their lead.
“If we were sloppy or tried to rush things it could have been a different story. The team were calm and focused and tried to create chances in the right ways.
“On a different night we could have won it. When you concede first I think you have to be thankful if you come away with a point because it is so difficult to win a game from 1-0 down.
“In the end I am pleased with the point and the way the players went about getting it.
“I am very happy with the performance and I’m proud of the players. They did everything they could to have won the game and were excellent.
“It is a squad game and everyone is so important to the success of the whole group and Gus (Lindgren) is a perfect example of that.”
Reading manager Leam Richardson admitted he was content with a hard-earned point.
“It was a very hard-fought point,” he said. “I thought all the good basics, the blocks, tackles and headers were the most pleasing thing.
“I thought we played miles better against them at home and lost. In the second half we were using our squad and I thought they were all on the pitch doing their best. It was a well-earned point.
“Any point away from home is a very positive point. We had a big journey to Plymouth on Boxing Day and then we are back on the pitch in Peterborough three days later.
“The lads have done really well. We have to go again in another 72 hours and be judged.
“In the first half we were really good and strong on the counter-attack. We could have been better with the ball and we spoke about that at half-time.
“Their fans got behind them and we dropped 10 yards deeper than we wanted.
“We defended resiliently and nearly caught them at the end, which would have been really pleasing.”
