Wycombe boss Michael Duff was frustrated by the late goal that denied his team victory at Plymouth.
Dan Casey headed Wanderers into an 11th minute lead before substitute striker Bim Pepple earned Argyle a 1-1 draw when he headed in from a corner in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time.
Duff said: “We are ninth but only three points above the bottom four so it is tight and that’s the disappointment from today, a win would have put us six points clear.
“It was a good away performance, we totally dominated the first 20 minutes.
“I have been here a lot and it was the quietest I’ve ever heard it. I thought we were in total control and scored a good goal.
“Then it got a bit scrappy and they had injuries, we had injuries and it went a bit bitty.
“It sort of got the crowd involved then but for all their territory I can’t remember Will (Norris) making any type of save at all.
“And in the second half they had territory but I thought we had some really good moments on the counter-attack that we didn’t quite take.
“We had 13 shots and only one on target is disappointing.”
Wanderers host leaders Cardiff on New Year’s Day and Duff added: “It’s a funny quirk in the fixtures list that we are playing all three relegated teams in a row.
“It’s a tough run anyway in terms of the amount of games you’ve got to play. Three of the sides relegated from the Championship in a row is tough but we’ve been good at home.”
Pepple’s goal was not enough to prevent Argyle slipping back into the bottom four and boss Tom Cleverley said: “I thought Wycombe sustained a level throughout the game that we fell below in the first half.
“It’s my job to find out the reasons why that is and make sure that is something we don’t see again.
“In the second half we were clearly above their level and if the game had gone on for another five minutes I think we would have gone on to win.
“We had three first half shots, zero on target, 13 second half shots, five on target.
“There was no beating around the bush, we know what’s needed now and we are in a position we don’t want to be.
“So it was (the) complete opposite of what we saw in the first half and the players reacted very well.
“We let them off the hook first half, second half we put that right. Second half I thought there was only one team that was going on to win it.”
On Pepple, Cleverley added: “I thought Bim did great when he came on at Doncaster and he got a really important goal for the football club today, he should take confidence from that.
“That’s 10 points from our last five games now and that’s more like the form we want to see in the second half of the season.”
