Jon Brady’s first game in charge of Port Vale ended in victory as the Valiants booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Fleetwood.
Jordan Shipley scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time to ensure the bottom side in Sky Bet League One progressed at the expense of the team in 13th place in League Two.
It secured a perfect start for new manager Brady, whose appointment was confirmed earlier this week following the sacking of Darren Moore last month.
The first big chance of the first half fell to Vale’s Devante Cole, who was denied from point-blank range by a fantastic save from David Harrington just beyond the half-hour mark.
Shortly afterwards, Fleetwood’s Lewis McCann was carried off the pitch on a stretcher with what appeared to be a serious injury.
The break in play led to a hefty nine minutes being added on before half-time, the first of which saw home captain George Byers go close with a shot across goal.
The hosts took the lead moments later as Shipley met Cole’s cross first time to fire the ball home from the edge of the area.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser after the break, with Ethan Ennis crashing an effort into the side-netting and substitute Shaun Rooney heading over from six yards out, but Vale held on.
