Kieran Green’s late winner ends Weston-Super-Mare’s record FA Cup run

Weston-Super-Mare’s club-record run in the FA Cup came to an end as they were beaten 3-2 by Grimsby at Blundell Park.

The visitors responded on two separate occasions to Grimsby’s goals, but the Mariners’ quality prevailed as they defeated a non-league opponent at home for the third successive round.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 41st minute as Charles Vernam received the ball from a short corner and curled the ball past Weston goalkeeper Max Harris from outside the area.

The Seagulls were back on terms in the 49th minute as Luke Coulson’s free-kick deflected off the wall, and despite Jackson Smith’s best efforts to scramble across the ball looped into his net.

Grimsby recovered from the early second-half setback as substitute Jaze Kabia was quickest to the ball in the box as it was recycled from a corner, poking his side back in front in the 70th minute.

Weston were able to reply for a second time as striker Louis Britton slotted the ball in from close range, as it was flicked on from a free-kick.

The Mariners did have the final say in the 86th minute, as another substitute, this time Kieran Green, looped a headed attempt over Harris at the near post from a corner.
