Jensen Weir’s goal gives Wigan a win which moves them out of relegation zone

Wigan moved out of the Sky Bet League One drop zone thanks to a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield, whose own play-off hopes took a dent.

The visitors had the better of the first half and hit the post through Ryan Hardie, with Alfie May’s follow-up cleared off the line by Morgan Fox.

Bali Mumba then saw a deflected shot hit the bar, with the rebound from Alfie May being brilliantly saved by Sam Tickle, and the second rebound from Marcus Harness being nodded away by Owen Moxon.

The second half, however, was a different story, with the home side asking far more questions.

On the hour, Fraser Murray’s deep corner was headed goalwards by Callum Wright, only for former Wigan goalkeeper Lee Nicholls to tip the ball over the bar.

Moments later, the same combination this time saw Wright steer the ball back to Jensen Weir, who drove the ball home from 25 yards through a crowd of bodies with 28 minutes to go.

Huddersfield came close to a leveller right on 90 minutes, only for Tickle to make a brilliant save from Harness’ well-stuck shot, to the delight of the home fans inside the Brick Community Stadium.
