Grimsby went to within a point of the Sky Bet League Two play-offs at the expense of fellow top-seven challengers Salford with a 3-1 victory at Blundell Park.
The Mariners took the lead in the 33rd minute as Kieran Green’s near-post run was picked out by Charles Vernam from a corner, allowing the former to head home his delivery.
The provider became the scorer for the hosts just six minutes later as a cross from Green pinballed around the box, landing at the feet of Vernam, who volleyed home from the edge of the six-yard box.
Jude Soonsup-Bell’s first Grimsby goal made it three for the Mariners in the 42nd minute as he headed home Darragh Burns’ inswinging cross from the centre of the penalty area.
Cole Stockton pulled a goal back for Salford in the 53rd minute as he followed in Rosaire Longelo’s long-range effort, which rebounded off the crossbar.
Ryan Graydon fired over with an acrobatic effort from distance in the final 10 minutes as the away side were unable to make further inroads into Grimsby’s lead.
