Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands as Bolton produced a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Wycombe to keep alive their automatic League One promotion hopes.
Steven Schumacher’s side were two minutes away from losing their 10-game unbeaten record before Ruben Rodrigues netted his first goal for the club.
Hull loanee Mason Burstow headed in Eoin Toal’s cross in the second minute of added time to equalise before a third substitute, Corey Blackett-Taylor, completed the great escape moments later.
“I’m shattered,” said manager Schumacher as Bolton closed the gap on second-placed Cardiff to eight points.
“If we scored one, I fancied us to score a second. I didn’t expect us to get three. Thank goodness we did.
“It was a mad game. We were 2-0 down at half-time and deservedly so. They had a big chance to go 3-0 up and Cauley Woodrow should have scored.
“They didn’t take it and they got punished. The spirit, the character and the belief we have got we have shown loads of times before.
“But also the quality because all three goals were quality. The winner deserved to win any match.
“Wycombe will be disappointed because they played well, but we showed that we are difficult to beat and don’t give in.
“We would love to score early goals and kill teams off but sometimes you don’t get things all your own way.”
Former Manchester United boss Ferguson had headed to the exit before the last-gasp drama.
On Ferguson’s presence, Schumacher said: “I knew he was coming. He should know more than anyone not to get off before the end, but hopefully he enjoyed the game.”
Woodrow and Luke Harris put Wycombe in front, and when Bolton skipper Eoin Toal’s effort was adjudged not to have crossed the line, the Chairboys thought they had weathered the storm.
Wycombe boss Michael Duff said: “I have mixed feelings because we came here and showed what we can be.
“It’s frustrating and disappointing because they couldn’t get near us first half.
“In the end we ran out of legs. But I was proud of our first hour. I thought we were brilliant and dominated the game against a good team.
“But when you get to the 88th minute you can’t concede three goals in nine minutes.
“Obviously, we want to win the game but if you are going to lose that’s the way to do it. We were beaten by an absolute worldie.”
