We want more – Neil Harris and Cambridge hungry to build on Salford win

Neil Harris called for more even after Cambridge claimed a vital victory over Salford.

The Us earned a fully deserved win which should have been more comfortable than the 1-0 scoreline. They had numerous chances and restricted Salford to very little, with the game decided by an excellent James Gibbons header early in the second half.

Harris’ side are five points clear of their opponents and with promotion rivals MK Dons losing at the same time, Cambridge sit two points behind them with a game in hand.

“We don’t accept what we’ve got. We want more all the time,” Harris said afterwards.

“Today I thought was an outstanding performance, a brilliant result against a good side.

“But are we happy with that, what we’ve done this year? No, no. At the start of the season we said 72 (points) might be enough to get you in the playoffs. We’ve chased 70 points now for the last six weeks, now let’s chase the 80-point barrier and see where that takes us.

“I was very calm at half-time. I said there’ll be a moment in the game, a big moment that wins you the game or gets you a point today. There happened to be two.

“James Gibbons’ goal is built off sheer desire to want to head the ball and win. That’s all he’s done in that moment. At the other end Easty (Jake Eastwood) makes a great save to get us the clean sheet.

“Ultimately we deserved to win the game from chances created and dominance of the game at times.

“They’ve won four games in a row. We’ve limited them to next to nothing around our goal today.”

Salford boss Karl Robinson took an opposing view and felt the visitors deserved something from the game.

“In the first half we kept them really quiet,” he said. “I know the quality they’ve got, I think they know the quality that we’ve got. It was a very even first half, I don’t think anybody twisted in any way.

“We’ve got to deal with (the goal). We have to head the ball, we can’t allow something so simple. It’s a great header and a great ball in but from our perspective it’s a silly free-kick to give away, it’s a ridiculously easy header.

“After that there was only one team that I felt was going to get anything in the game. We looked a real imposing threat when we made the changes.

“I don’t think it was there to lose it. I think a draw would have been a fair result against a very, very good Cambridge team. When you play in big games you always are at the mercy of one moment of brilliance or human error.”
