Danny Webb: Chesterfield’s narrow win at Accrington was vital in play-off push

Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb admitted his side pulled off a vital win as Will Dickson scored the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 League Two victory over Accrington.

Manager Paul Cook made six changes, including goalkeeper Ryan Boot and goalscorer Dickson, with the forward tapping home in the 63rd minute from Tom Naylor’s cross.

The Spireites also hit the woodwork in each half through Kyle McFadzean and Lee Bonis as they remain in eighth place, level on points with seventh-placed Grimsby but having played a game more.

Webb said: “All the other teams (around there) won so we needed those three points.

“The gaffer made the point in the dressing room after the game that we shouldn’t be in this position where we are, trying to get in the play-offs with the talent we have got.

“Today, we showed a gritty side but we haven’t shown enough this season to be higher in the table and that’s down to us.

“It was important as this is a tough place to play at against a physical, hungry team.

“It did take us a while to get going, we looked a bit nervous which is understandable as we couldn’t afford to lose any more ground on seventh position.

“Once we grew into the game, I thought we were the better side.

“I thought we looked quite comfortable in all aspects of the performance and when the chance came for Will Dickson, he was in the right place at the right time. He deserved that goal as he worked his socks off.”

Webb confirmed that Will Grigg and Tom Pearce could miss the rest of the season with injury.

Stanley manager John Doolan was frustrated as his side tested Boot through Shaun Whalley, Tyler Walton and Josh Woods, while Donald Love headed over in the first half.

His midtable side have now gone seven games without a win.

Doolan said: “My players are giving everything, you can’t fault their efforts or their desire and it was a big improvement from our defeat to Notts County on Tuesday.

“I asked for a response and we got it but the opportunities we had, we didn’t take them. We just couldn’t find the equaliser.

“Their goalkeeper has made a couple of saves so we aren’t alarmed that we aren’t scoring.

“I’m proud of the way the players are going about it and the fans can see that they are giving their all.

“It was good to get Tyler Walton back and Isaac Sinclair started after injury and you can see the difference they make.

“We are not resting on our laurels, we still have our own aims, we want to finish as high as we can and compete against every team we play against.”
