David McGoldrick earns Barnsley last-gasp draw at Burton

David McGoldrick snatched a last-minute point for Barnsley as they rescued a 1-1 draw against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium.

Charlie Webster, who had been out with injury since November, had looked set to mark his return to action with the winner, only for McGoldrick’s late leveller to deny Albion two precious points in the battle for survival.

Barnsley could have been ahead early on when Tom Bradshaw diverted McGoldrick’s effort goalwards, but Brad Collins was able to keep the ball out.

McGoldrick also fired over as the Tykes made the early running, despite losing defender Eoghan O’Connell to injury.

Barnsley keeper Kieren Flavell, making his first league start of the campaign, saved comfortably from Jake Beesley’s header but had to rely on defender Tennai Watson to help him deal with Jack Armer’s angled drive.

Bradshaw and defender Mael de Gevigney then both had chances as half-time beckoned.

Burton went close to a breakthrough early in the second half when Andy Cannon’s low cross left Flavell rooted to his line, with Beesley and Jasper Moon inches away from converting.

And they went in front on the hour mark when former Barnsley man Kyran Lofthouse escaped down the right before unselfishly passing to Webster to slot home.

Barnsley rang the changes and it was substitute Marc Roberts who headed a free-kick back into the danger area for McGoldrick to grab a late equaliser.
