James Berry effort enough as Chesterfield edge Barrow to maintain play-off push

James Berry made the most of a Wyll Stanway mistake as Chesterfield maintained their League Two play-off charge with a 1-0 win at relegation-battling Barrow.

It is the fourth-successive time the Spireites have beaten the Bluebirds by that scoreline since they returned to the Football League.

Liam Mandeville missed the target with an early chance as the Spireites threatened.

At the other end, Elliot Newby blasted the ball over the crossbar before Sil Swinkels nodded wide for Paul Cook’s Chesterfield.

Barrow captain Niall Canavan’s tame header was easily saved by goalkeeper Ryan Boot on the half-hour mark.

After the break, Newby sent another effort soaring over the bar for the hosts.

The decisive moment came in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Stanway gifted Berry an easy opener, which he dutifully slotted home.

Stanway kept the Bluebirds in the game late on as he first denied Lee Bonis from close range before he kept out Dylan Duffy in stoppage time.

Barrow are a point shy of safety with five games to go, whilst Chesterfield maintained their hold on seventh.
