Kieron Dyer admits Chesterfield ‘didn’t deserve’ draw at Fleetwood

First-team coach Kieron Dyer admitted Chesterfield did not deserve their point from a 1-1 draw at Fleetwood.

Ched Evans had fired the hosts ahead shortly after visiting defender Kyle McFadzean had been sent off for a last-man foul on Ronan Coughlan.

Although Ryan Stirk’s first goal for the club earned them a draw, Dyer was adamant it was one they had not warranted.

“Fair play to Fleetwood, they were better than us, we were nowhere near the races,” said Dyer. “The positive was the last 10 minutes, we ramped it up a bit and they dropped deeper. And we got a point that we didn’t deserve.

“We’ve touched on our mindset and inconsistency and thought we were going to get a performance today, but this game sums up our season, we are so inconsistent.

“We looked a bit leggy today, but that doesn’t make up for a lack of discipline in our shape. We were all over the place at times.

“For the sending-off their player touched the ball first, but it was very, very harsh for Fadz to be sent off because it wasn’t a goal-scoring opportunity, it was going straight through to (goalkeeper, Ryan) Booty.

“I’m sure we’ll appeal that red card because he’s probably been our best performer on the pitch, he’s really important to us so hopefully we can appeal that and get it rescinded. When you appeal these decisions you can sometimes get an extra game put on it, but we probably have nothing to lose.

“We’ll watch it back and then make a decision from there.”

Fleetwood boss Matt Lawlor felt his side should have been out of sight before conceding the equaliser, and lamented his side’s wastefulness in front of goal.

“We should have won that game 4-0,” he fumed. “I’m sick of us giving away poor goals and not sticking the ball in the net.

“I don’t know how many games I’ve been in charge for but in that time we’ve mostly been dominant, I know we were against 10 men today but I thought we were brilliant even before that.

“In the second half we had some unbelievable chances. We’ve got to be ruthless in those moments.

“I should be stood here after a 4-0 win in my opinion and I won’t be changing that, even after I watch it back but I’m thinking of chances that need to be put in the net.

“We are dominating but you leave it on a knife-edge at 1-0, you given them something to cling on to, and it’s that ruthless mentality in front of goal that we just haven’t got at the moment.

“We give the lads belief, a structure and the freedom in that final third but I need people that are ruthless in that final third and in the box.

“It’s frustrating, there were a lot of pleasing aspects to the performance but the result isn’t pleasing.”
