Port Vale slip to brink of relegation following goalless draw with Wigan

Port Vale were left on the brink of relegation to League Two following a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home to Wigan.

The hosts turned in another toothless display in front of goal and never looked like getting the victory they needed.

Vale must now win all of their four remaining fixtures and hope Leyton Orient and AFC Wimbledon fail to pick up the points they need for survival.

Joe Taylor and Will Aimson both sent efforts off target for the visitors during the early exchanges.

Taylor fired wide before shooting straight at Joe Gauci after finding plenty of space after 29 minutes.

Vale felt they should have had a penalty just before half-time after Ethon Archer went down under a challenge from Morgan Fox.

Taylor fired wide after latching on to a sloppy defensive pass in the opening moments of the second half.

A powerful shot by Archer then produced an excellent save from Sam Tickle after 56 minutes.

Tickle produced an even better reflex save in stoppage time to keep out Ben Waine’s close-range effort.
