More health and recreation facilities are needed in Tipperary
Part of the vocabulary of Tipperary is sport and all the emotion that surrounds it.
Week-in and week-out, children go to a whole variety of sports within the county as diverse as judo, camogie and rugby. Participation has become part of the daily routine of life for many and great credit must go to all the schools that promote exercise and physical education across their school curriculum.
The constant efforts of voluntary coaches across the county too must be acknowledged as well as the input of essential instructors and coaches such as lifeguards who give lessons each week.
People of all ages must be encouraged to realise the importance of staying fit and healthy and that is why walkways and off road cycle tracks are of the utmost importance to ensure resources in Ireland keep up with international standards.
Tipperary sports stars are thriving in their chosen field, the elephant in the room though is that the drop off rate in sport is too high amongst young people while Ireland lags behind in catering for those outside of elite spheres.
Obesity is a global health crisis so more needs to be done to bring sport and group activity to everyone. Better facilities and more Government funding is a must for all sporting codes and encouragement to stay involved must become the norm.
Local community groups need to bring groups together to aid social interaction and help avoid feelings of loneliness. Funding for these is of the utmost importance and needs to be focused on by Government bodies, not least in light of the fact that one in five children in Ireland is obese.
More people need to stay active for longer to stave off obesity related diseases which clog up the already creaking health service. For the majority it is not about performing on the big sporting stage but rather it is about enjoying being part of something and getting some physical exercise.
Keeping everyone active for longer is the key to a healthier society. Schools, clubs, community groups and councils must all play their part in the push for more active lifestyles. We can all play our part by pressuring politicians to open their minds and provide for those at grassroots level.
We all deserve good facilities, not just the sporting elite. Staying active is fundamental to health. Wherever you are, get out and enjoy the summer breeze and stay active. It is part of the rhythm of life.
