The passing of Irish music legend Shane McGowan has left many in shock and sadness in the last few days, after the news broke earlier this week that The Pogues frontman died aged 65.
The online reaction to the much-loved singer's passing has been incredible, with so many tributes and stories from the life of a troubled, but gifted musical mind.
See below some of the online tributes paid to McGowan since his passing.
One of our best ever songwriters.

A proper poet

I used to work in Hodges Figgis and Shane McGowan was the nicest celebrity customer . A deep passion for and knowledge of Irish history and politics. Used to buy piles of books, hand over a wad of 50s and ask for change to go in the poor box. A man of great talent and humanity. pic.twitter.com/yJwwsPo8ol

My reaction to hearing about Shane MacGowan's death was the same as my reaction to Lemmy's, which was, how the f**k did he make it past 60? Glad he did though. I life very well lived.

Played with The Pogues a few times in the late 80's & early 90's - Olympia Theatre, London Fleadh... wild performances! What always came across was the power of the songs. You could see what they meant to the many London Irish there. RIP Shane. Deepest sympathies @Victoriamary pic.twitter.com/O3tpJfvngT

Sorry to hear of the demise, after a long illness, of one of the greatest songwriters of my generation, Shane MacGowan. The Pogues reinvigorated folk music in the early 80s and his songs put the focus onto lyric writing, opening doors for the likes of myself and others.

Shane MacGowan has sadly passed away at the age of 65. Here's a picture of him and Bruce from May 2023, when Bruce was playing in Dublin. Rest in Peace pic.twitter.com/Fo3cwnA6R5

Sad news about Shane MacGowan.

I’ll never forget seeing the Pogues live just after the indoor smoking ban came in and Shane, in his typical recalcitrant style, didn’t give a feck and lit up a few cigs on stage ❤️
One of the greats.
RIP
