Tipperary County Council has come under political pressure to install traffic calming measures in Moyglass to slow down traffic passing the village’s primary school
Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald and Labour Cllr Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan appealed to council management to take action to improve road safety in the village at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting.
Cllr Fitzgerald urged the council to consider including a low cost safety scheme in its 2026 budget similar to the one installed in Cloneen that included an extra pedestrian footpath and safety bollards.
He thanked council staff for these long overdue safety measures on this “fast stretch of road”.
He said a number of parents highlighted their serious concerns over safety outside Moyglass National School on the radio and contacted him about the issue. Motorists were inclined to “put the boot down” driving on this wide stretch of road.
Cllr Brennan said he has raised the need for traffic calming measures outside Moyglass NS since his election to the council including sending CRM messages and requesting site visits but nothing had come to fruition.
He said it was a shame parents had to go on the radio to highlight their concerns. He considered it a very dangerous section of road and feared it was only a matter of time before an accident happened there.
District Engineer Michael Scully responded that the council would look at all road safety issues raised with it on a case by case basis but cautioned that it was dealing with a very tight budget.
He said motorists’ behaviour also needs to be looked at and expressed the hope that these road safety concerns would also be raised with An Garda Síochána, which is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws. “We are not the solution to all issues,” he pointed out.
Mr Scully pointed out that he will be meeting representatives of the school in Moyglass, probably after the mid-term break to examine the issues there.
He stressed people must recognise that all issues can’t be fixed at once. “There is a long list of road safety issues around the county and people need patience on this.”
