Mixed set of results for Clonmel rowers at event in Limerick

Clonmel’s Edward Wall won two categories at Castleconnell HOR (Head of River) and followed up a week later with a fine victory in the Cork sculling ladder

Clonmel Rowing Club went to Castleconnell in county Limerick for that club’s HOR (Head of River).

Once again the event was blessed with favourable weather conditions for racing and once again Clonmel had a mixed bag of results.

It was a very well attended event, with crews from all over Munster taking part over the 3k course.

In the coxless boats, steering can be challenging on the winding course and one or two of Clonmel’s scullers visited the reeds.

There were no such problems for Edward Wall, who scored a brace on the day, coming home first in the J15 and J16 1x.
Chris Kane and Sam Dowling have work to do to make inroads on Edward’s dominance.

In the Women’s J15 1x, Millie Crean is within touching distance of the top boats in this category. She is improving all the time and we look forward to the future with eager anticipation.

Clonmel’s J14 men’s crews struggled against quality opposition from St Michael’s and Muckross, but they have time on their side to turn things around.

The Ryan brothers, Stephen and Joseph, teamed up with their buddies from Shannon and they delivered an excellent second place in the masters men’s 4x-.

Paul Nugent had a new partner in the masters 2x, rowing with Paul Gallen from Athlone. The new combination had a great row to finish first in an eight-strong field.

In the Women’s Masters 2x, Denise Fleming and Roseanne Phelan are also a new combination, but they will have to pull up their socks if they are to threaten the top boats from St Michael’s and Tribesmen.

On Sunday last Clonmel sent down a small contingent of scullers to compete in the Cork sculling ladder, which is rowed over a 1.8k on the Marina.

There were some big names in attendance including Fiona Murtagh, fresh from her win in the single sculls at the World Championships in China.

Over 200 scullers took to the  water and once again Edward Wall’s name featured in the winner’s enclosure when he came out on top in the J14 1x.

Paul Nugent’s good run of form continued in the masters 1x when he left the competition in his wake.

Millie Crean continues to row consistently well to come in third place in the women’s J15 1x, with Kate Fogarty coming in just behind her.

In the men’s J18 1x, Oisin Walsh is going great guns and he finished in fifth place in a very competitive field and Darragh Noonan wasn’t too far away either, finishing eighth.

With the dark nights coming in, it takes extra motivation to leave our warm houses to attend the training sessions in Clonmel Rowing Club.

But remember, every time you do a good  session, it’s like putting money in your bank account, and when you need to withdraw it you have the funds in the account, helping you to deliver a great result.
