Tipperary County Council is requesting permission to construct a new footbridge aimed at improving access to the town’s park. The state planning appeals board is expected to issue a decision on the proposal towards the end of April next year.
Local Labour representative Fiona Bonfield has welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive development for the town.
“I am delighted that a planning application has been made to An Coimisiún Pleanala for a new riverside footbridge and walkway at Kennedy’s Lane in Newport that will provide a link to the ball alley amenity site in the town,” Ms Bonfield said.
She added that the project “aims to create a link between Newport town and the river and enhance the public realm by giving people a new recreational space to enjoy.”
According to the planning notice, the proposed development will include the construction of a new footbridge, resurfacing of the existing lane, and the creation of a walkway linking to the existing park, together with all ancillary site works necessary to complete the project.
The footprint of the proposed scheme lies within the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation, highlighting the environmental considerations accompanying the proposal.
