It was an exciting week at St Molleran’s GAA Club as work officially began on the first phase of the Carrick-on-Suir club’s long-awaited Raise the Roof astroturf facility.
Foundations have been laid, concrete poured and the first steel structures are starting to take shape, marking the beginning of a project that promises to be a huge boost for players, members, and the wider community.

The construction of this 1,500 sqm all-weather pitch is the €500,000 first phase of the Raise the Roof development, which the club has been fundraising for since the summer of 2023. The pitch will have three surrounding walls and railing on the open side.
St Molleran’s GAA Club recently received approval of a €150,000 Sports Capital Grant from the Government towards the cost of the astroturf facility that will take about three months to complete.
Phase two will involve the construction of a roof over the all-weather playing surface while phase three will involved the construction of a club gym and meeting rooms. The overall project will cost an estimated €1.5m
The new facility has been a dream of the club’s members for many years. Seeing the first tangible signs of progress brought smiles to the faces of everyone connected to the club.
Volunteers, committee members and contractors have all played a part in getting the project off the ground.
Once completed, the astroturf pitch will provide a modern, all-weather playing surface, supporting training, matches and community activities for generations to come.
“This is a huge step forward for our club,” said St Molleran’s PRO Adam Hunt.
“It’s not just about the facility itself — it’s about what it represents: community spirit, commitment, and the future of our players,” he added.
St Molleran's GAA Club said it is very thankful to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and expertise to make this vision a reality.
The club is particularly grateful to neighbouring landowner Ciaran Conroy of Glenvale Stud, who donated the site for the Raise the Roof sports development.
Under 15 Camogie Team Triumphs
Sporting success was also in the air last weekend as St. Molleran’s Under 15 camogie team claimed a thrilling victory in the Under 15 C County Cup Final at Cappoquin GAA Grounds. The team faced a tough Ballyduff Upper side but held their nerve to secure a final score of 1-06 to 1-01.
Key performers included Aoibhínn O’Shea, who delivered an outstanding display and Ruby Walsh, who showed remarkable courage in playing through a back injury.
The team’s dedication, skill and teamwork were applauded by everyone present. Special thanks is owed to the management team of Eoghan, Sarah, and Keith for their guidance throughout the season.
Christmas Draw Launched
St. Molleran’s recently launched its annual Christmas Draw, a key fundraiser for the club. Tickets are available from committee members and through the club’s social media pages.
All proceeds will go towards ongoing development projects and community initiatives. The club sincerely thanks everyone who supports the draw, emphasising that each ticket sold helps strengthen the facilities and programmes that benefit members of all ages.
Although many teams are winding down for the winter, St Molleran’s GAA Club’s CE workers and volunteers are busy ensuring the pitch is kept in top condition, giving it a well-earned rest to be ready for next season.
Under 20 hurlers in Eastern semi-final
Meanwhile, the Under 20 hurlers remain in championship action, with the Eastern semi-final scheduled for next weekend.
Details will be shared via the club’s WhatsApp group and social media. The team has been praised for its talent and commitment, and the club is optimistic about their chances as the championship continues.
“With the Raise the Roof project underway, the Under 15 camogie victory, and the ongoing support from members and volunteers, it’s clear that St. Molleran’s GAA Club remains at the heart of the community,” said Adam Hunt.
“From young players taking to the pitch to dedicated volunteers keeping the club running smoothly, everyone’s efforts here have combined to make the club a hub of sport, camaraderie and community pride in Carrickbeg and Carrick-on-Suir. We are really looking forward to the next few months.”
