Uisce Éireann is continuing to progress vital upgrades to Carrick-on-Suir’s drinking water infrastructure by replacing aging watermains in the town centre, and tackling leakage to ensure a stronger, more reliable water supply for the local community.

The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, involve the replacement of 1.7km of aging water mains, which have been prone to bursts and high levels of leakage, with new modern pipes.

Over 1.4km of old water mains have been replaced so far across the town on Bridge Street and Main Street.  These complex upgrades will significantly reduce water lost to leaks, improve pressure, and enhance the overall resilience of the water network, serving homes and businesses in the area.

Speaking about the works, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “We would like to extend our thanks for the continued support and patience of the local community in Carrick-on-Suir while these complex works progress.

“We acknowledge that replacing old pipes under the streets of the town centre is inconvenient. Our crews are making every effort to reduce disruption while we deliver these critical works as quickly and safely as possible.

“New, modern water mains are vital to ensure security of supply in Carrick-on-Suir now and into the future, with the long-term benefits far outweighing any short-term inconvenience.

“We are committed to delivering a more secure and reliable water supply to communities across Ireland.  These works in Carrick-on-Suir are part of that effort, ensuring fewer disruptions, improved water quality, and a network that’s fit for the future.”

Works continue along Main Street this week and the week commencing November 24 during the day. From 15 December night works will progress for one week along Main Street to limit the overall impact on the community.

Works to install new water mains on West Gate will take place from November 17 for one week under road closure at nighttime followed by a road closure for the first two weeks of December on New Street to Quay Bridge. This will allow for the safe installation of the new water mains and individual connections to each property.

The new year will bring final installation of new water mains, and connection works primarily along Greystone Street and Main Street, with remaining connections on other streets along the footpaths.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
