'He looks 30' - People shocked by age of oldest ever Garda graduate from Tipperary

Social media users have been left scratching their heads after the Garda College in Templemore shared a photograph of their oldest ever graduate garda.

The Garda College Templemore Facebook shared the image of trainee Garda Jeremiah Bourke who will pass out as the oldest person ever to complete training at the Garda College this Friday.

Garda Bourke will make history as he graduates at the age of 51. Social media users have been left shocked by his age given his youthful appearance.

The Borrisoleigh native had prior experience in retail and security, along with qualifications from Griffith College, but always dreamed of joining the force. The recent increase in the age limit to 50 finally made his aspiration a reality.

People were quick to wish Garda Bourke well in the comments with one person saying, “he looks about 30, fair play to him.”

A second message read: “You say he's 51? What's his secret to staying young looking?”

A third wrote: “Great to see someone taking a leap like that, I want to say "at his age,” sounds terrible, I'm older! I changed my career in my early 40s, not easy but glad I did. Fair play, a lifetime of experience to bring to the role, best of luck!”

One person suggested the entry age be increased again to 60, adding, “plenty of fit 50-year-olds (like this man), with a lot more life experience to offer, than younger kids, that would possibly like to join as part of their career life. Be nice to have the option, wouldn't it? Good luck to you, Sir.”
