Athletics star Sharlene Mawdsley and hurler Michael Breen were photographed appearing relaxed and cheerful while on the team holiday in South Africa organised by the Tipperary senior hurling team. Mawdsley, the Newport‑based sprinter who has represented Ireland at the highest level, and Breen, the Ballina‑born corner‑back and All‑Ireland medallist, were observed enjoying the leisure portion of the schedule. Their appearance underscores how the social side of elite sport often intermingles with competitive achievement.
The team’s holiday follows the Premier County’s triumph in the All‑Ireland final, and signals a phase of reset ahead of the 2026 season, which begins with the Allianz National League in late January.
For the couple the timing is opportune. Both have entered the off‑season with strong recent form: Mawdsley preparing to resume her athletics campaign and Breen returning to intercounty pre-season after the holiday. Their sojourn in South Africa offers a moment of respite and reflection before training recommences in earnest.
