Major flooding hits Tipperary as council facilities close and roads become impassable

Severe flooding has hit Nenagh, Co Tipperary, following days of heavy rainfall that have left parts of the town under water and several council-run amenities closed.

Nenagh Leisure Centre and the adjoining playground, both operated by Tipperary County Council, were forced to close today after floodwaters spread across the complex. The popular Nenagh Riverwalk has also become unusable, with large sections submerged.

Cllr Séamie Morris said the situation highlights long-standing concerns over the town’s flood defences.

“The Council leisure centre and playground are closed due to flooding,” he said. “Micheál Martin is in town over the next few days you might ask him why the Nenagh flood relief scheme announced in 2020 didn’t go ahead.”

Cllr Morris added that the town’s wastewater treatment plant was “close to being flooded”, raising fears about potential environmental impacts if water levels continue to rise.

Meanwhile, Cllr JP O’Meara urged motorists to exercise extreme caution as surface water and debris continue to make driving conditions hazardous across the town and surrounding areas.

“Please be alert when driving this evening — there is flooding in many areas due to the large amount of leaves and debris on roads being washed into water inlets by the heavy rain we’re experiencing, and blocking the drainage,” he said. “I’ve received a number of calls and messages in the last few days about this issue, so please don’t hesitate to contact me after today’s rain as we try to clear all blockages.”

Council crews have been working throughout the day to clear drains and assess damage, but with further rain forecast, residents are being advised to remain vigilant and avoid flooded areas where possible.
