The opening of a new pharmacy and café in Carrick-on-Suir creating 22 new jobs in the town was lauded and welcomed by councillors at Carrick Municipal District’s monthly meeting.

Carrick Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne performed the ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the new Mulligans Pharmacy and coffee shop on the Pill Road at lunchtime last Thursday shortly before the meeting of the district’s councillors.

The pharmacy, located opposite the Town Park and close to Carrick-on-Suir Primary Care Centre, has drive through facilities and is also open all day on Sundays.

The opening of the new business was unanimously welcomed by councillors at the meeting.

The Cathaoirleach Cllr Dunne said he was “mighty impressed” with the project and described the creation of 22 local jobs as “spectacular”.

The Sinn Féin councillor said some people thought it would negatively affect other pharmacies in the town but he believed it will have “A rising tide lifts all boats” impact that will benefit Carrick and show it’s a town “on the up”.

Fellow Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke praised Mulligans Pharmacy Director Ronan Mulligan for transforming what had been a derelict site.

He recalled how in November last year he was very critical of the state of the property, which he described as having gone to “rack and ruin” with net curtains blowing out of broken windows and drug abuse taking place inside the building.

Following his criticism, he said he received a phone call from Mr Mulligan who assured him work would take place on the property in the new year and asked him to give them some space.

Cllr Bourke recounted that he replied “no” and words were exchanged between them that day.

However, he pointed out Mr Mulligan took immediate action and blocked up the site the following day and tidied it up.

And since then Mr Mulligan invested hugely in Carrick and he welcomed the creation of this “fantastic” seven days a week pharmacy and coffee shop and the creation of over 20 jobs.

“Fair play to him. He did exactly what he said he would do and I wish him the best for the future,” the Fianna Fáil councillor declared.

Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald, Labour Cllr Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan and Fianna Fáil Cllr Amy Goldsboro also heartily welcomed the creation of the new jobs and wished the owners of the new business every success with the venture.
